Rebuild Update #5, 11/27/21

Our new motorhome is here. Geri and I are settling in, with a lot more time every day to work on the many projects. We have to thank Geri's mother and father, Louisa and Ed for this wonderful gift. It is a 25 foot long 2007 Tioga. We are getting our internet connection and phone service sorted out, and preparing for the winter.

I have finished throwing my first 3 dozen or so pieces since the fire, in my temporary "Pump house" workshop. I have purchased all of the necessary glaze minerals to mix my first half dozen glaze batches, as well as kiln shelves, a scale, mixing equipment, etc.. I hope to have my first fresh batch of pottery available for sale in early December.

We are seriously considering cinder block construction for the new workshop, in which I hope to be making pottery by June. Concrete and steel is a good choice for any pottery studio, especially in this part of California. Once we are adequately settled into the motorhome and the temporary workshop, we will resume clearing debris for the new workshop.

Videos of me, throwing

Throwing a few little urns and vases

In a couple of days, I will bisque fire all of these pieces, while I mix a half dozen glaze batches. After a few firings in the next couple of months, I should have 20 or so glazes mixed, close to my full palette.

Cutting slots in a sponge holder

Sponge holders are popular for air-drying wet kitchen sponges next to the sink. They discourage bacterial growth, adding a decorative elemlent. I prefer to let them dry slowly, so the pieces are uniformly "Cheese Hard" for slicing in one quick step. Later, when they are leather hard, I smooth the edges with a wet sponge.

Throwing a bowl, bottle, and vase

With these small pieces, we now have a few dozen pieces to fill the temporary kiln. I am pulling all of the handles the old-fashioned way, so I will experiment with some more decorative applications (see the next slideshow).
