Santa Clara and Temescal this weekend October 29 & 30

Geri and I will bring our pottery to the Santa Clara Farmers' Market this Saturday October 29, and to the Temescal Farmers' Market this Sunday October 30. We are sanding and boxing quite an assortment.

This time around we have been experimenting with many new glaze effects, examples of which are in the slideshows below. There are 3 dozen new pearls (I seem to have forgotten to take pictures of a dozen of them), my most productive glaze application experiments. They are especially lovely art pieces, as well. Along with an asortment of old favorite glaze effects, I have applied several of these new effects to many mugs, bowls, sake cups, etc..

While our building plans proceed grudgingly, I continue to build upon the output of my little pump house workshop. This pottery will be stunning in two of our favorite destinations this weekend, Santa Clara and Temescal.

For times and directions, please see my market schedule (click here).

      Throwing Pearls

Geri took some video of me throwing "Pearls," my glaze application tests and delightful artwork. I throw these miniature pieces in the widest possible assortment of shapes and contours. During firing, as gravity tugs the molten glazes downward, the randomly applied layers interact differenthly on horizontal and vertical, concave and convex surfaces.

The finished pearls are beautiful little pieces of pottery, and they stimulate new glaze effects for everything I make.

      Glazing Pearls

We are exploring my process of glazing these Pearls. I start with an example of a tried and true color combination from earlier experiments on a couple of mugs. Then I explain my process of applying the glazes in a complicated process of "Informed randomization". Right now I have 12 glazes mixed, which can produce up to 1,728 (12 cubed) possible combinatios of three-way glaze applications.

I have a sense of which glazes have proven themselves overlapping on my various current glaze effects. As I choose which color to apply next, there are a lot more untested options than tested ones.

The blends I especially like, I will begin applying on many of my mugs, bowls, etc..  It will take hunders of applications over months and years to fully explore each intruiging pearl color.
