Scott Wilson Pottery
Full-time Studio Potter (1997–Present)
Professional Summary
Full-time studio potter with over 25 years of experience, specializing in handcrafted ceramics that blend functionality with artistic expression. Known for unique glazes and attention to craftsmanship, I bring a deep commitment to quality, inspired by my appreciation for both art and science.
Education and Early Inspiration
My journey in clay began in 1978 at the College of Marin, where I explored both biology and the arts. Originally a biology major, I was drawn to the beauty of the universe’s workings and switched my focus to physics, inspired by pioneers such as Bohr and Lemaître. This, combined with my deepening involvement in the art world, coalesced into a career in studio pottery, blending my scientific curiosity with artistic expression.
As a potter, I’m inspired by masters across disciplines—from Marcel Duchamp’s lifelong rebellion to George Ohr’s drive and vision. My favorite artists include Duchamp, Giacometti, Diebenkorn, and Voulkos, while my pottery style is influenced by the traditions of Asian pottery, contemporary art pottery, and Native and colonial American ceramics.

At Clouds Pottery, worked as an independent contractor delivering bisque-fired pieces weekly for glazing and firing. Gained expertise in porcelain’s durability and aesthetic appeal, inspiring my transition to porcelain in my own studio.
Scott Wilson Pottery (1997–Present)
Founded my studio with a custom Cone 6 porcelain blend developed through extensive research, aiming for fired non-porosity, plasticity, and stress resistance. Sourced economical materials to achieve a durable, high-quality body resistant to warping and cracking.
Leveraged a glaze base recipe from my college days, allowing me to create a cohesive collection that balances tradition with experimentation.
